Breaking Bad Season 5

Like the rest of you, I?m extremely skeptical of Walt?s relationship with Todd. I loved the montage of them cooking. Walt is a wonderful teacher, encouraging even: ?You did fine Todd, you applied yourself, that?s as much as I can ask.? But, just as the Scarface reference in Episode 3 seems a handy foreshadowing of Walt?s eventual fate (speaking of which, what was the movie Mike was smugly watching when the DEA raided his house?), The Monkees? misleadingly upbeat ?Goin? Down? surely offers us some clues to the future of this relationship. ?And it's so hard to stay afloat/ I'm soakin' wet without a boat.? Walt is floating along at this point, clearly desperate for some human interaction?someone who looks up to him and respects him. Todd can?t judge Walt because he never knew him before. Walt was always Heisenberg to Todd. This recognition, as you mentioned, Matt, is all Walt has left.

But to answer your question more directly, no, it doesn?t seem like Walt has a plan, at least not a good one. This episode?s opening scene, which as Matt suggested might be the beginning (if not the middle) of Walt?s downfall, was the first time I really doubted one of his plans. Before last night, even if I wasn?t on his side, I always felt confident that Walt would figure everything out, but this plan seemed kind of, well, half-baked. What exactly is he proposing, and are they really scared of him just because he killed Gus? It?s still not clear to me why Declan would even go along with it; after all, if he just killed Walt, he?d be the guy who killed the guy who killed Gus. (Not to mention he?d eliminate his biggest competition.) But maybe that?s just me thinking a little too much like Walt, not keeping in mind the repercussions.

Let?s not forget Jesse, though. Walt?s promise from last week clearly didn?t go as planned?everyone didn?t win. With Mike dead, where does that leave Jesse? I was glad to see him walk away when Walt got all high and mighty about the ?blood money.? The earlier shot of Walter closing the garage door on Jesse and Mike made me (naively) hope that he was done with them?but now that Mike?s dead, I?m eager to see how Jesse reacts. Will he come back? Will he be the one to finally turn on Walt?

Speaking of Mike, our legal expert Emily is not here, but I?d love for someone to explain this to me: Is Mike Dan?s client, and if so, can a lawyer flip on a client like that? I don?t watch as many procedurals as you, Matt, but isn?t that illegal? At the very least, doesn?t it defeat the purpose of attorney-client privilege? I?m not exactly sure how this works, but it seems strange to me that Mike would leave himself vulnerable like that when he?s so careful about paying off everyone else?though I will admit I loved Gomez?s confident grin when Dan got caught.

Which reminds me, is anyone else skeptical of Walt?s excellent timing? It felt a little absurd to me that Walt would be in the office at the exact moment that Gomez told Hank that Dan would flip on Mike. It reminded me of the Arrested Development gag mocking TV shows in which characters turn on the TV and the segment they were discussing just happens to be playing exactly at that moment.

Emily Nussbaum wrote a fabulous piece in last week?s New Yorker making the suggestion that Breaking Bad might be ?a hero?s tale in disguise,? a story in which Hank is really the hero and the series ends with some relief for the ?suffering audience.? As much as I rooted for Walt to outsmart Hank in the show?s first few seasons, this episode reminded me that Hank is actually a great detective (even if he can?t see what?s right in front of him). But having the series end with Hank virtuous and victorious doesn?t sound like Breaking Bad at all. I suspect that Hank will have to compromise himself in this pursuit. After all, that scolding he got about spending too much time and effort trailing Mike screamed illegal wiretap. Or maybe now I?m just confusing this show with The Wire.

Shut the fuck up and let me die in peace,

Follow These Internet Marketing Tips For Building Your Business ...

Marketing online is probably the most effective way to reach out to the greatest amount of people. Many people go online each and every day. The next generation of children will not even know what the yellow pages were. Well-crafted Internet marketing is evolving to meet the needs of this new medium as effectively as possible.

Evaluate the actual merits of your the product or service you are marketing. You can have the best internet marketing around, though if what you are selling is below average, you will not see any changes to your bottom line. Providing a superior product at a competitive price helps ensure increased sales.

Your website tag should contain a simple, clear definition of you and the focus of your site. Many people will either be enticed further or steered away by what they read in your website?s tag. If you say something stupid, confuse readers, or don?t have an authentic message, you won?t make as many sales.

Here is a great tip for successful internet marketing. Always keep a clear objective, and understand that it needs to be on the landing page. Make the page all about promoting your product. When a viewer sees your landing page they should have a clear understanding of what you have to offer. If your customers have to invest time and effort in order to find what they are looking for, you are hurting your potential for success.

A great way to market via the Internet is to write about your business. If you have any writing talent whatsoever, you could definitely submit various press releases and articles to different sites and magazines. Include your website information along with all your business information. Offer freebies to the editors as a way to get your articles published.

Even small, internet based businesses can benefit from a slogan and a good logo. These tools can help build your brand and make customers remember you. Great slogans stay with customers over time. When they are ready to buy from you, they will remember your tagline, and buy from you.

For business or personal correspondence, always place your own signature at the end of emails. In many ways, your e-mail signature is like a business card, so write a memorable signature that you would be happy to share with everyone on the Internet. Offering the person you are emailing a chance to see what your business is can help to increase site traffic and revenue.

Feature a video of yourself demonstrating how to use any products you are selling. Customers love seeing products in use, so take advantage of this fact and make a promotional video. Be sure to demonstrate any and all features and benefits that the product has. You can post these videos on a personal blog or a video hosting site such as YouTube.

One method for getting new customers is setting up a landing page that allows users to opt-in. Squeeze pages effectively prompt any visitor to supply their email address for something in exchange. You can even give them an incentive to sign up like a coupon or promotional item to get them to fill out contact information. This demonstrates to them that you understand the value of the information you?re asking for.

Offering potential customers free courses is a great way to get them to come to your site. This strategy can be very effective, and you might consider packaging your course with a relevant product that the customers feel enticed to purchase. You can also run a contest that allows the participant to win something of added value.

To increase your income, you must generate more subscribers. Use a split test to determine which of two marketing strategies is more successful. For instance, show one landing page to 50 people, and another to 50 different people. You can determine which ad is more effective based on subscription rates.

You have to regularly update your content on your website and keep it as current as possible. If someone visits your site and the information is outdated, they may assume that the company is not doing well and that it is a waste of time for them to contact you. Fresh, new content will attract readers and increase your ranking within the search engines, too.

Your internet marketing venture won?t work on luck alone; you need to have persistence and dedication too. You will never come across a big business that just happened to ?luck? into fame and fortune. Coca Cola?s success isn?t pure luck, but rather years of research and work that culminated in a wildly successful soft drink. They did not. They had a well-oiled marketing machine.

Getting your site listed by Google should be a key part of your Internet marketing strategy. You can take the time to register your website yourself, or you can pay for someone else to do it for you. Google has a wide range of directories and listing options. Use them to your advantage.

Don?t spend too much for advertising. Like many other business expenditures, advertising is subject to the law of diminishing returns. After a certain point, further spending provides little benefit. If you do invest money, it is important that it is worth your money to do so.

Be certain that the information you provide to customers when you promote your business is appropriate. Your content should be informative, unique and accurate. Be sure you keep your information up to date. Outdated information is not professional and can turn away visitors.

Give potential customers a reason to visit your site. You may offer a day or more sale on a $1 e-book. People who visit your website for the item on sale may wind up buying other items from you. Many times these visitors don?t just leave with the e-book, but with other products you sell.

Advertising online will help businesses target a specific audience. Taking advantage of this opportunity allows businesses to get the most out of their advertising expenditures. Internet marketing also makes it easy to track how effective your efforts are. A great place to invest marketing money is the Internet.

Segarini: Seg's Scrapbook ? Snapshots and Stories for Modern Men ...

Well, hello there Dudes and Dudettes. Time for another stroll down memory lane to visit the past so we can embrace the present. Some of you may have seen this before (around 3 years ago) when I first published it in a slightly different version in a long-gone blog called FYIMusic. I?m sure for most of you, this will be something new. If, like Homer, you cringe when Patty and Selma bring over the slides from their vacations, you may be excused, grab a beer, and watch some television. For those of you who like to sit on the couch and look at pictures in a dog-eared scrapbook, pull up a chair and lean in. The stories start now?

Seg?s Scrapbook

Snapshots and Stories for Modern Men and Women

A Few Family Photos?

I was about 3 years old when this was taken. That?s me, my mom, and the family dog, Spotty?a Water Spaniel my dad bought as a hunting dog, but who ended up being my babysitter most of the time. Somewhere, there is an 8 millimeter home movie of him dragging my ass around the backyard at 464 E. Ellis by my diaper, but I have yet to find the box where all those old Kodak movies are tucked away. We were in Long Barn California, a curve in a 2 lane highway in the Sierra Nevada?s on the way to Pinecrest. Sorry for the blurry image, but apparently no one could focus a camera until the late ?80?s?and even then it was a crapshoot. Being an only child (and adopted at that) Spotty was my only and best friend for years

This is my dad (in the middle) my cousin Bob Gray (on the left) and my Uncle Al playing Liar?s Dice on the living room floor at 4 East Monterey in Stockton. This pastime was my father?s favourite second only to blasting the shit out of unarmed deer, pheasant, ducks, and other animals that sat regularly on our dinner table when Pop had a good hunt.

My cousin Bob was a Navy pilot during the Vietnam War and had the enviable job of transporting celebrities and dignitaries to and from various and sundry meetings, USO Shows, and photo ops. Among his prized possessions, a pair of cufflinks presented to him by Bob Hope, dozens and dozens of great stories, and a Vietcong produced American dollar bill with a picture of a woman sucking a dick on it instead of George Washington?s stiffly grimacing face.

One of the great stories I have since heard from other sources was first told to me by my cousin. Bob flew then President Richard Nixon and Louie Armstrong to a destination in Vietnam, and Louie, a proud and veteran user of wacky weed and marching powder had a stash in his trumpet case. Walking to customs, Armstrong asked President Nixon if he wouldn?t mind carrying his trumpet so Louie could manage the rest of his luggage. Nixon reportedly said he?d be honored, and Satchmo?s stash made it to and from Vietnam without incident. Nixon not only opened the door to China and ended the Vietnam War?he made sure Satchmo was comfortably numb for our fighting men and women overseas. Thank you, President Nixon. Thank you.

Speaking of my dad, this is a snapshot that Amy?s mother took the first time my father saw his granddaughter. It was love at first sight for both of them. My dad had a habit of keeping a lot of change in his pocket. He jingled when he walked. When Amy was old enough to walk, she used to follow him around when we?d visit and try to stick her hand in his pocket to get at the coins. My dad would give her a silver dollar or a fifty cent piece for her trouble. She could have gone to college with the amount of money she got out of his pockets when she was a toddler.

Fear of being struck by lightning didn?t keep me from Amy?s baptism. Apparently, the Catholic Church is very forgiving, and I emerged unscathed. The Holy Water did burn a little, however?

This is my then wife, Amy?s mom, Cheryl, and my cousin Eddie, the infamous Steady Eddie from the song of the same name. A free spirit and a lover of life in the extreme, Eddie now divides his time between homes in Squaw Valley and Cobo San Lucas, surfing or skiing with an old friend, John Bossi, and staying out of trouble, or not getting caught, I?m not sure which. Ed is one of my favourite people. So is Cheryl.

?Extended Family Photos?

When I moved to Toronto and started working on what would become an EP for A&M records, this kid was going to Centennial College and wanted to be a journalist. He asked me for an interview and I gave him one. I also took him out to A&M and introduced him around. Over the next several years we became great friends, made the rounds to check out all the local bands at the clubs, listened to and discussed the latest ?New Wave? and Punk records, stayed up many a night laughing and drinking and amusing (and pissing off) either his mom or my wife no end, and even took up golf. He has gone on to become a mainstay in the Canadian Music Industry and a man whose extraordinary taste in music makes him a formidable ally if he and partner Todd Arkell decide to manage your band. Ladies and gentlemen, may I present Cam Carpenter.

?

After the A&M EP, the label dropped me with the explanation, ?We don?t know what to do with you.? These two thought they did, and financed and finished the Gotta Have Pop album. One of them had his own pet project, Battered Wives, while the other championed my band through 3 albums and a couple of years of great times, and would later bring me on board to launch a dot com that was a decade ahead of it?s time, Musicmusicmusic, Wolfgang Spegg. His partner on the left, is Phil Lubman. This picture was taken at Amy?s 2nd Birthday party in 1978.

Also at that same party, Pete Kashur, seen here getting a look of disdain from girlfriend Kerri. I cannot explain the Dunce Cap. Pete?

?Different party, same goofy grins. Hedley, one of the Segarini Band?s trusted and crackerjack road crew, and the future Mrs. Mark Bronson, publicist, promoter, and dear friend, Colleen Irwin. God, there were a lot of parties at the little house on Armadale Avenue?

Some Musical Memories?

Cheryl and I at the Junos in 1979. I was up for producer of the year for Gotta Have Pop and lost to Joe Vanelli for brother Gino?s deserving LP. It was so weird to be there as a participant, and weirder still to hear a bunch of applause and woots when my name was announced. We were the indie underdog, the Bomb Records family and I, and it felt fantastic just being nominated.

Me posing with the incredible Wurlitzer Jukebox that Bomb bought and sent out to tour the front windows of record stores across Canada to promote Gotta Have Pop. Wolfgang promised me the Jukebox when it came back off the road after the tour. Legend has it that Phil Lubman picked it up at the airport in an old VW pickup and accidentally dumped it out onto the 401 swerving to avoid another vehicle. I have always suspected that it was only rented and given back, a lie along the lines of the one my parents told me when Spotty passed away. For years I thought he had been taken to a friend?s farm so he could chase rabbits. The lens flares predate JJ Abram?s Star Trek by decades?

The Segarini Band opening for Teenage Head at the much missed Forum in Toronto. We are on the revolving stage in front of 15,000 people who are waiting to see Frankie and Company. All in all a great gig if you ignore the burning, overturned Police cars and being trapped in the dressing rooms for hours. Nice night for a party, wasn?t it??

I was working at Q107 as The Iceman when I got a call from some old friends who were in town to play a club in Toronto. As always, getting together with Mark and Howard turned into a night of debauchery and laughs. Here we are on stage at Nag?s Head North singing their signature tune, Happy Together. I just love these guys, and try to see them every summer that they come through town.

These are not just some little girls we?ve taken to Canada?s Wonderland to ride the rollercoasters and eat funnel cakes. These are the sisters from The Jets, who should have been the next Jackson Family and whose song, All Over Him, is still one of my favourites. My friend, Don Williams, is lurking in the back. We took Amy there to see the band live and they were amazing. I have a great picture of Ames with the group, but of course, I can?t find it.

This picture of Bruce Allen and I was taken at the after party in the basement of Massey Hall when Bryan Adams shot a couple of videos for his latest album. I have known both Bryan and Bruce for a long time, before either one of their careers exploded. They remain completely unaffected by their success. Both are as nice (and as talented) as they were at the outset, and to this day, both of them always find the time to spend a few minutes when we run into each other.

I was in New York with a group of people for a series of Jays games with the Yankees once, and the organizer of the trip and another friend and I had drinks in a little upscale restaurant/bar behind the Loews Hotel in a laneway off of 57th street the night we got in. The MTV Music Awards were taking place on the same weekend, and the area was crawling with rock stars and fans alike. After running up a sizable bill, Joe, the organizer of the trip, went to pay the tab with a Canadian Traveler?s check and was told by the bartender, ?We only take real money here?. Canadian money just made him laugh and roll his eyes. I looked around to see if I might know anyone (Little Steven and a couple of tall blonde ?fans? were at the table behind us), and when I glanced over at the cash register, I noticed Bruce Allen paying his bill. What are the odds in a city the size of New York? I asked him if he could help us out. Without hesitation, he cashed one of Joe?s traveler?s checks, gave us some backstage passes for Bryan?s show at MadisonSquareGarden the following night, and disappeared into the night after a nice conversation about how great the food was.? At the party this picture was taken at, they ran out of beer. Bryan, not asking a roadie or someone else to do it, went out to one of the tour buses and brought back another case of beer from the onboard stash. How many rock stars would do that?

A great Polaroid test shot for a magazine article about yours truly that I think was taken by legendary rock photographer, John Rowlands. I forget the magazine, but I will never forget that guitar. John, help me out here. Was it you?and whose guitar was that?

And finally?

Every now and then the stars align and a night to remember happens without warning or planning. The Anger Brothers, an underrated and ridiculously fun band that started out as a side project for Greg Godovitz and I, was playing at Jeff Healey?s fine basement dive one night when two old friends showed up with musician friends in tow. One was Warren Cosford, who brought legendary singer/songwriter Jack Scott down to the club, and the other was long time friend Miguel, whose oldest and dearest friend, Jose Feliciano, was in town for a visit. Mutual friend Kim Everest who owns Powerhouse Casting in Toronto was with Miguel and Jose.

It was enough that they were in the house, but having both of them come up onstage and sit in was an honor. We sang backup (along with Warren) on some of Jack?s biggest hits (The Way I Walk, What In the World?s Come Over You) and sang along with Jose on a handful of great classic Beatle tunes and played behind his amazing version of Light My Fire. When it couldn?t have been any better, Jeff Healey joined us onstage and everything went up another notch. Here?s a picture of Jack, Me, Jeff, Jose, Miguel, and Kimmie. Those grins are the honest result of good friends and a great night of music.

May you all have nights like these?

Politics and prejudice explored

ScienceDaily (Aug. 20, 2012) ? Research has associated political conservatism with prejudice toward various stereotyped groups. But research has also shown that people select and interpret evidence consistent with their own pre-existing attitudes and ideologies. In this article, Chambers and colleagues hypothesized that, contrary to what some research might indicate, prejudice is not restricted to a particular political ideology.

Rather, the conflicting values of liberals and conservatives give rise to different kinds of prejudice, with each group favoring other social groups that share their values. In the first study, three diverse groups of participants rated the ideological position and their overall impression of 34 different target groups.

Participants' impressions fell in line with their ideology. For example, conservatives expressed more prejudice than liberals against groups that were identified as liberal (e.g., African-Americans, homosexuals), but less prejudice against groups identified as conservative (e.g., Christian fundamentalists, business people).

In the second and third studies, participants were presented with 6 divisive political issues and descriptions of racially diverse target persons for each issue. Neither liberals' nor conservatives' impressions of the target persons were affected by the race of the target, but both were strongly influenced by the target's political attitudes.

From these findings the researchers conclude that prejudices commonly linked with ideology are most likely derived from perceived ideological differences and not from other characteristics like racial tolerance or intolerance.

Mommy Katie: Great Family Game Night Games from Asmodee!

When it comes to family time and fun, we love to hold a family game night at least once a week. It gives us a chance to have fun and enjoy each others company, a bonding time for the entire family. We love to play games both on our consoles and board games. With me on complete bed rest, we have had to make our family game night either a board game night or a card game night. I find the board games to be a lot of fun and easier for the kids to pick up on then it is with some of the card games that my husband and I like to play. Well recently we were sent a couple of great board games that are fun, exciting and challenging, which in all makes for a very fun night of games! We were sent DiXit Journey and Barbeque Party from Asmodee games to review! In the game of DiXit Journey, you have the whole family testing their skills, by creating clues with one or more words that can even be like a group of sounds, which is created by the active player. Then the rest of the family has to find the card that is just like the clue. It is a game that may sound complicated but is one we were able to get the kids involved in and have fun along with us in!! This is a game that you can simplify for the younger kids but make it more complicated for when you have just adults and older children playing as well!!! We have loved adding DiXit Journey to our family game night and if you like to get those brain juices flowing while having fun then DiXit?Journey is the game for you!!!!
The other game that we were sent from Asmodee to add to our family game night was Barbeque Party. This is one that is great for the kids to play either with other kids or like we did, with the whole family. This fun game brings grilling to a whole other level, one that the kids love! The game includes all of those barbeque favorite items. When you pick a card you are told what is needed to grill, then once you pick the same card again the item is ready to come off of the grill. The thing is, this cute little grill is ticklish and if he gets tickled than your meal can be late! We loved playing this fun game with the kids on our family game night and the kids have loved playing this game together for tons of fun together!! If you are looking for a great game for the little ones to play and to add to your family game night then get them Barbeque Party!!!!

This was not a paid post and honest/original opinions were used and they are my own. Thank you to the company and/or pr agency who supplied the product for review.

JUPITER, FL August 2, 2012 Scientists from the Florida campus of The Scripps Research Institute have identified a protein that impairs the development and maintenance of lymphoma (cancer of the lymph nodes), but is repressed during the initial stages of the disease, allowing for rapid tumor growth.

While the study, published in the August 3, 2012 edition of the journal Cell, largely focuses on the role of this new tumor suppressor in lymphoma induced by Myc oncoproteins (the cancer-promoting products of Myc oncogenes), the authors show this circuit is apparently operational in all human tumors with MYC involvement, which is more than half of all human tumor types.

"This opens a new therapeutic avenue to exploit for cancers with Myc involvementincluding relapsed metastatic tumors and refractory tumors, those that have not responded to treatment," said John Cleveland, a Scripps Research professor and chair of the Department of Cancer Biology, who led the study.

The Myc family of oncoproteins (c-Myc, N-Myc, and L-Myc) regulate critical pathways that contribute to tumors; c-Myc expression, which is activated in human Burkitt lymphoma, is sufficient to induce the growth of several tumor types in animal models.

In the new study, the scientists focused on precancerous and malignant Myc-expressing B cells, part of the immune system affected in human lymphoma. Using transgenic animal models, Cleveland and his team, led by the efforts of senior postdoctoral fellow Robert Rounbehler, showed that Myc-directed repression of a protein called tristetraprolin (TTP/ZFP36) was important for both the development and maintenance of cancer. The suppression of TTP is a hallmark of human cancers with MYC involvement, Cleveland noted.

The scientists' results showed that overriding this pathway by forced expression of TTP more than doubled the lifespan of Myc transgenic mice. Strikingly, Rounbehler discovered that re-introduction of TTP into Myc-driven lymphoma totally disabled these tumors, indicating an important therapeutic target.

The authors showed that Myc regulates hundreds of genes that contain adenylate-uridylate-rich elements (AU-rich elements), which play an important role in RNA stability and are found in many messenger RNAs (mRNAs) that code for oncogenes, nuclear transcription factors, and cytokines. AU-rich elements direct the mRNA for degradation; they are thought to be vital for controlling expression during cell growth.

"Myc regulates the expression of select AU-binding proteins to control the destruction of certain mRNAs," Cleveland said. "Also, our study strongly suggests that other AU-binding proteins may also, in fact, function as tumor suppressors in other cancers."

The first author of the study, "Tristetraprolin is a Tumor Suppressor That Impairs Myc-Induced Lymphoma and Abolishes the Malignant State," is Robert J. Rounbehler of Scripps Research. Other authors include Mohammad Fallahi, Chunying Yang, Meredith A. Steeves, Weimin Li, Joanne R. Doherty, and Franz X. Schaub of Scripps Research; Sandhya Sanduja and Dan A. Dixon of the University of South Carolina; and Perry J. Blackshear of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences.

The study was supported by the National Institutes of Health (grant numbers DK44158, CA167093, F32-CA115075, and CA134609), ThinkPink Kids Foundation, the State of Florida, the National City Charitable Contributions Committee, the Glenn W. Bailey Postdoctoral Fellowship, and the PGA National Womens Cancer Awareness Days.
