Business Foundations sets 'glocal' agenda for running WA ...

Business Foundations, which last month won a tender to operate Western Australia?s Innovation Centre at Technology Park, Bentley, has set a ?glocal? agenda to spur entrepreneurship and innovation.

It wants to stem the state?s brain drain, focusing on the local aspect, while simultaneously tapping synergies with the U.S., a key global lifeline that gives Australian startups generous funding and expertise, besides provides access to the world?s largest market.

We talk all the time about Australia?s brain drain of start-up talent going offshore; well, the same is true of WA. You have to have the support and resources for local innovators to help them develop their ideas and markets,? Executive Director Phil Kemp told Anthill.

We plan to expand links between the United States and the innovation community in WA, as the U.S. represents about 27% of foreign investment into Australia, and there is strong interest from areas like Silicon Valley,? he said. ?The team we are bringing together at the WA Innovation Centre have the contacts, expertise and hands-on experience to help innovators turn their ideas into commercially viable enterprises or products.?

Business Foundations is itself a storied organisation that has nurtured entrepreneurs for the past two decades. Its own establishment is a tribute to entrepreneurship ? sandal makers in the Fremantle Markets pushed for its formation after receiving rare mentorship from a Murdoch University student. Its first business incubator was run from the Old Fremantle Prison.

Our skills lie in giving business owners and would-be business operators the management training and assistance to help protect them from the early pitfalls and booby traps that most new firms face,? Kemp said. ?We have a proven track record of working in the SME sector and we are involved in Perth?s angel investor and tech start-up ecosystem.?

So, who is the guy at the centre of the innovation program?

It?s not the smart guy making millions of dollars working from a computer in their garage, Kemp pointed out in a bid to alter broad perceptions. He or she is more commonly ?a researcher, scientist or an industry expert with a cutting-edge idea and absolutely no idea how to test the market, secure the intellectual property, commercialise the innovation, develop the network that will support the venture and find the commercial backing to make it a reality,? he said. Last year, the Innovation Centre empowered over 1,000 such innovators with its range of services.

Kemp says his non-profit organisation will work with new and existing innovative businesses to identify opportunities for introducing innovation to the market.

The innovation space in Australia lacks a clear connection between the people who generate good ideas and the people who will pay for them. What is required in Australia for innovation to quickly gain momentum is a better way to identify the market potential of ideas and then connect the innovators to potential customers,? said Kemp.

The key intermediary in this process is the businesses that are in dire need for innovation in order to survive, and investors scouting for the next big thing.

ICWA will connect Western Australian businesses that require innovative technologies and processes to remain globally competitive to the people that are developing innovative technology and process solutions,? said Kemp.

The Innovation Centre will focus on a number of sectors including mining services, technology, manufacturing and services.

Another issue Kemp seeks to address is early market validation.

Without a customer, an innovation is just a good idea and what you don?t want is someone to waste two or three years muddling around before they finally get to the potential market only to find the customer isn?t interested and doesn?t want the product,? he said.

Consequently, Innovation Centre wants to get businesses talking to potential customers sufficiently early, and attain validation before speeding up the process of implementation of innovation.

Business Innovations also operates the Small Business Centre South West Metro and Enterprise Connect. It has offices in Perth, Fremantle, Kwinana and Rockingham.

Wealthy homeowners brace for 'fiscal cliff'

Getty Images

Real-estate experts say that as more of the wealthy sell out of fear of a tax increase, they could drive up inventory and lower prices in the top of the real estate market.

By Robert Frank, cnbc.com

Realtors to the rich have started getting a strange new kind of phone call.

Wealthy homeowners with properties for sale are suddenly demanding that the brokers get them a deal ?in the next five months. The reason, they say, is the fiscal cliff.

If the Bush tax cuts?expire?and capital-gains tax rates go up on Jan. 1, sellers in the high-end real-estate market could owe millions more in taxes on their sales. As a result, many wealthy sellers are racing to close before 2013. Others who were thinking of putting their homes on the market next year or later are listing them this summer.

Call it ?The Mansion Cliff.? Real-estate experts say that as more of the wealthy sell out of fear of a tax increase, they could drive up inventory and lower prices in the top of the real estate market, which has been one of the few bright spots in the economy. Any softening at the high end, or a spike in inventory, could ripple through the housing market and add new pressure to prices, although it could also increase sales volume.

??This has become a key issue for sellers,? said Stephen Games of?Pacific Sotheby?s Realty?in San Diego.? ?Sellers want to get a deal done before the election. They want to avoid the uncertainty.?

Games said that one of his clients recently sold a $13 million ocean-view property in La Jolla, Calif. for less than the original asking price ? in large part to avoid the possible increase in taxes next year. The tax savings from the deal was more than $600,000 compared to the potentially higher bill next year.

?Jorge Uribe, one of the top?luxury brokers?in Miami, recently sold a mansion in the posh enclave of Indian Creek for $38 million. He said the owner accepted a price below his original goal for fear of the tax cliff.

??It was certainly a factor in his decision,? Uribe said. ?When you?re talking about $38 million, that?s a big difference in tax savings. The tax issue was definitely a motivator in his decision to take a little less than he wanted.?

?One New York broker said she got two new listings in the past week that were driven in part by tax fears.

??The sellers were on the fence on whether to sell, but when they considered the cliff, they decided to list,? the broker said. ?They want to do this quickly. The message to me is, 'Get this done now.'?

?Granted, the tax fears of the mansion-set may prove to be unfounded. Capital-gains rates could remain unchanged if a deal gets done in Washington. And the selling deliberations of the wealthy are a minor problem compared to the broader headwinds in the economy.

?What's more, the rich (especially foreigners) continue to buy real estate as an investment as stocks and other financial investments weaken.

?Yet the million-plus real-estate market experienced a similar spasm in 2010, when many of the wealthy feared Congress would raise capital-gains rates. Inventory popped up and and prices slumped.

?Jonathan Miller, of Miller Samuel, the New York appraisal and consulting firm, said that in the fourth quarter of 2010, the supply of homes priced at $1 million or more increased in the New York area. In the affluent Hamptons, inventory increased 5 percent in the fourth quarter, a much greater increase than the same period a year earlier.

?Miller said a similar or even larger increase is likely this year.

?I?m confident we?ll see just as much or more this time because of the fiscal cliff,? he said. ?People are going to be pressing to close earlier than they might have.?

The math of the mansion cliff is compelling. If the Bush tax cuts are allowed to expire, the current capital-gains tax of 15 percent will rise to 20 percent. Alan Kufeld, a principal with accounting firm Rothstein Kass and an advisor to wealthy families, explains that families who sell a second home that they?ve owned for more than a year pay capital-gains taxes on the difference between the sale price and their original purchase price (minus certain fees, improvements and other deductions).

A $38 million home purchased for $8 million with $2 million in improvements could show a gain of about $28 million. The current federal tax bill on that gain would be around $4 million. If taxes go up next year, the tax would be $5.5 million ? a difference of $1.5 million.

The new federal health-care tax of 3.8 percent also kicks in next year for couples who make $250,000 or more. But for the $28 million gain described above, the tax could add another $1 million, bringing the total tax difference to $2.5 million.

On primary residences, where owners have lived for more than two out of five years, there is a $500,000 exlusion. But brokers say that when a home is priced at $10 million or $20 million, the exemption is less of a factor.

In addition to the federal tax, there will also be state and local taxes applied to the gains. Some of those tax rates are also expected to go up in some states next year.

Kufeld aid his clients aren?t making long-term real estate decisions based on short-term tax issues. And the deals have to fit into a family's broader planning. But he said that since the potential tax savings are significant, ?families are certainly having discussions about it. And they should.?

The Hit Man Who Becomes a Hit Woman

The British series Hit & Miss (DirecTV, Wednesdays at 10 p.m. ET) opens with a view to a kill. A hooded figure wields a gun with a very long sound suppressor, a verbose silencer, and shoots his prey on the roof of a parking garage. The shooter strides back to his car and pulls the hood from his head to unveil a rare femme fatale: The terrific Chlo? Sevigny is playing a contract killer named Mia, and in the rearview mirror she puts a tube of lipstick to her mouth with ritualistic precision. She drives off to continue the striptease at her apartment?one of those vast bare lofts so often inhabited by hired killers of a melancholy bent. Preparing to shower, she strips to show her waist, her breasts, her rear?and who is this little fellow dangling from a fringe of pubic floss? Mia is a pre-operative male-to-female transsexual, and Sevigny wears a prosthesis in a casual way, part of a low-key performance that?s as naturalistic as can be, given the local climate of sentimental pulp.

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? He was a tubby tough guy with a pug of a mug, as unlikely a big-screen star or a romantic lead as could be imagined.

Yet Ernest Borgnine won a woman's love and an Academy Award in one of the great lonelyhearts roles in "Marty," a highlight in a workhorse career that spanned nearly seven decades and more than 200 film and television parts.

Borgnine, who died Sunday at 95, worked to the end. One of his final roles was a bit part as a CIA records-keeper in 2010's action comedy "Red" ? fittingly for his age, a story of retired spies who show that it's never too late to remain in the game when they're pulled back into action.

"I keep telling myself, 'Damn it, you gotta go to work,'" Borgnine said in a 2007 interview with The Associated Press. "But there aren't many people who want to put Borgnine to work these days. They keep asking, 'Is he still alive?'"

And yet people put him to work ? and kept him working ? from his late-blooming start as an actor after a 10-year Navy career through modern times, when he had a recurring voice role on "SpongeBob SquarePants," became the oldest actor ever nominated for a Golden Globe and received the lifetime-achievement award last year from the Screen Actors Guild.

Borgnine died of renal failure at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center with his wife and children at his side, said spokesman Harry Flynn.

With his beefy build and a huge orb of a head that looked hard enough to shatter granite, Borgnine naturally was cast as heavies early on, notably as Sgt. Fatso Judson, the brute who beat Frank Sinatra's character to death in 1953's Pearl Harbor saga "From Here to Eternity."

More bad guy roles followed, but Borgnine showed his true pussycat colors as lovesick Marty Piletti, a Bronx butcher who, against all odds and his own expectations, finds romance with a wallflower in "Marty," adapted from Paddy Chayefsky's television play. Borgnine won the best-actor Oscar, and the film picked up three other awards, including best picture.

It turned out to be Borgnine's only Oscar nomination, yet it was a star-making part that broke him out of the villain mold. Borgnine went on to roles in such films as "The Dirty Dozen," ''The Wild Bunch," ''The Flight of the Phoenix," ''The Poseidon Adventure" and "Escape from New York," but after "Marty," the veteran sailor's most memorable character appropriately came with the title role of the 1960s TV comedy "McHale's Navy" and its big-screen spinoff.

Mischievous con man McHale, commander of a World War II PT boat manned by misfits and malcontents, was far closer in spirit than shy Marty or savage Fatso to the real Borgnine, who had a cackling laugh and a reputation as a prankster.

Despite his big-hearted nature, Borgnine was typecast as a thug from the start, playing bad guys in a series of Westerns including Randolph Scott's "The Stranger Wore a Gun," Joan Crawford and Sterling Hayden's "Johnny Guitar" and Gary Cooper's "Vera Cruz" and Victor Mature and Susan Hayward's historical saga "Demetrius and the Gladiators."

Borgnine was playing another nasty character opposite Spencer Tracy in "Bad Day at Black Rock" when he auditioned for "Marty." In a 2004 interview, Borgnine recalled that Chayefsky and "Marty" director Delbert Mann thought of him as an actor whose lone screen specialty was to "kill people."

The filmmakers had hoped to cast Rod Steiger, who played the lead in the TV version of "Marty," but he had just landed a part Borgnine himself coveted ? the bad guy Jud Fry in "Oklahoma!" Mann and Chayefsky flew to the "Black Rock" location to audition Borgnine, who showed up wearing a "cowboy suit, cowboy hat, three-day growth of beard, cowboy boots," the actor recalled. He even began the audition in a Western drawl before shifting to Marty's Bronx accent.

Borgnine said he knew immediately he had won over Mann and Chayefsky, and "Marty" charmed audiences who saw for the first time that he could play the teddy bear as well as the beast.

No one knew Borgnine could act at all ? himself included ? until he came home from World War II after his 10-year Navy stint. He enlisted in 1935, was discharged in 1941, then re-enlisted when the war began, serving on a destroyer.

As he contemplated what to do after the war, Borgnine's mother suggested acting.

"She said, 'You always like getting in front of people and making a fool of yourself, why don't you give it a try?'" Borgnine recalled last year, shortly before receiving his SAG lifetime honor. "I was sitting at the kitchen table and I saw this light. No kidding. It sounds crazy. And 10 years later, I had Grace Kelly handing me an Academy Award."

Mann and Chayefsky also won Oscars, and modest, gentle "Marty" claimed the best-picture prize over big-budget contenders "The Rose Tattoo," ''Love Is a Many-Splendored Thing," ''Picnic" and "Mister Roberts."

"Marty" made his career, but the success also brought complications for Borgnine.

"The Oscar made me a star, and I'm grateful," Borgnine said in 1966. "But I feel had I not won the Oscar I wouldn't have gotten into the messes I did in my personal life."

Those messes included four failed marriages, including one in 1964 to singer Ethel Merman that lasted less than six weeks.

But Borgnine's fifth marriage, in 1973 to Norwegian-born Tova Traesnaes, endured and brought with it an interesting business partnership. She manufactured and sold her own beauty products under the name of Tova and used her husband's rejuvenated face in her ads.

During a 2007 interview with The Associated Press, Borgnine expressed delight that their union had reached 34 years. "That's longer than the total of my four other marriages," he commented, laughing heartily.

Borgnine played a sensitive role opposite Bette Davis in another film based on a Chayefsky TV drama, "The Catered Affair," a film that was a personal favorite. It concerned a New York taxi driver and his wife who argued over the expense of their daughter's wedding.

Among Borgnine's other films were "Three Bad Men," ''The Vikings," ''Torpedo Run" and "Barabbas," ''Ice Station Zebra," ''The Adventurers," ''Willard" and "The Greatest" (as Muhammad Ali's manager).

More recently, Borgnine had a recurring role as the apartment house doorman-cum-chef in the NBC sitcom "The Single Guy." He had a small role in the unsuccessful 1997 movie version of "McHale's Navy." And he was the voice of Mermaid Man on "SpongeBob SquarePants" and Carface in "All Dogs Go to Heaven 2."

"I don't care whether a role is 10 minutes long or two hours," he said in 1973. "And I don't care whether my name is up there on top, either. Matter of fact, I'd rather have someone else get top billing; then if the picture bombs, he gets the blame, not me."

In 2007, Borgnine became the oldest Golden Globe nominee ever, at 90, for the TV movie "A Grandpa for Christmas." It came 52 years after his only other Globe nomination, for "Marty," which he won.

He didn't win that second time, but Borgnine was as gracious as could be about it.

"Hey, I already got one," Borgnine said. "I was nominated and I think that's wonderful. You don't have to win them all."

Ermes Efron Borgnino was born in Hamden, Conn., on Jan. 24, 1917, the son of Italian immigrant parents. The family lived in Milan when the boy was 2 to 7, then returned to Connecticut, where he attended school in New Haven.

When Borgnine joined the Navy, he weighed 135 pounds; when he left 10 years later, he weighed 100 pounds more.

"I wouldn't trade those 10 years for anything," he said in 1956. "The Navy taught me a lot of things. It molded me as a man, and I made a lot of wonderful friends."

For a time he contemplated taking a job with an air-conditioning company. But his mother persuaded him to enroll at the Randall School of Dramatic Arts in Hartford. He stayed four months, the only formal training he received.

He appeared in repertory at the Barter Theater in Virginia, toured as a hospital attendant in "Harvey" and played a villain on TV's "Captain Video."

After earning $2,300 in 1951, Borgnine almost accepted a position with an electrical company. But the job fell through, and he returned to acting, moving into a modest house in Los Angeles' San Fernando Valley.

His first marriage was to Rhoda Kenins, whom he met when she was a Navy pharmacist's mate and he was a patient. They had a daughter, but the marriage ended in divorce after his "Marty" stardom.

Borgnine married Mexican actress Katy Jurado in 1959, and their marriage resulted in headlined squabbles from Hollywood to Rome before it ended in 1964.

In 1963, he and Merman startled the show business world by announcing, after a month's acquaintance, that they would marry when his divorce from Jurado became final. The Broadway singing star and the movie tough guy seemed to have nothing in common, and their marriage ended in 38 days after a fierce battle.

"If you blinked, you missed it," Merman once cracked.

Next came one-time child actress Donna Rancourt, with whom Borgnine had a daughter, and finally his happy union with Tova.

On Jan. 24, 2007, Borgnine celebrated his 90th birthday with a party for friends and family at a West Hollywood bistro. Still boisterous, Borgnine made a rare concession to age at 88 when he gave up driving the bus he would take around the country, stopping to talk with local folks along the way.

During an interview at the time, Borgnine complained that he wanted to continue acting but roles were tough to find at his age.

"I just want to do more work," he said. "Every time I step in front of a camera I feel young again. I really do. It keeps your mind active and it keeps you going."

Slump in export orders hits Asian factories

BEIJING (Reuters) - A factory slump in Asia's two biggest exporters China and Japan deepened in June as crumbling orders from abroad dragged activity to seven-month lows, heightening worries that the health of the global economy is deteriorating.

PMI reports on major exporters South Korea and Taiwan also indicated new orders from overseas were falling. The manufacturing sectors in these countries contracted in June for the first time in five months, the reports showed.

In India, where the economy is more reliant on domestic activity, the factory sector picked up in June. But its new export orders growth was the weakest in seven months.

The data increases the risk that the economies of major demand centers Europe and the United States may be weaker than previously thought. Purchasing managers' reports on the two regions are due to be published later on Monday.

The latest sign that China's economy is struggling came on Monday with a private purchasing managers' index (PMI) showing factory activity shrank at its fastest pace in seven months in June. The index slipped to 48.2 from May's 48.4.

The drop was driven by new export orders skidding to depths last seen in March 2009 as demand at home and abroad wilted. The slump dragged prices of finished products from Chinese factories to 42-month lows.

The gloomy outcome mirrored a Chinese government PMI issued on Sunday that also fell to seven-month lows of 50.2 in June from May's 50.4. Though the data was stronger than expected, it still showed growth in the factory sector was close to stalling.

The run of weak data suggested no immediate pick-up for the world's second-biggest economy, a story that is similar in Japan, home to big-brand exporters, such as camera and printer maker Canon Inc , which earns about 80 percent of its revenues abroad.

Japan's June PMI, released on Friday, slipped to 49.9, below the 50-point mark that separates expansion from contraction. Japan's index for new export orders dropped to 47.5, the sharpest pace of contraction since February.

PMIs are closely watched as a leading indicator of economic activity. Export orders, especially for major trading nations such as China, Japan and South Korea, point to activity even further into the future and give a sense of the economic health of North America and Europe.

The euro zone's PMI is forecast to show activity still shrinking as the region deals with the debt crisis that has forced five member states to seek international financial support and threatened the future of the bloc.

Europe's manufacturing sector is already languishing at three-year lows as the region's debt crisis batters confidence and saps new orders. The outlook for U.S. manufacturers is brighter, with factories still expanding, albeit more slowly.

POLICY SUPPORT

To shield itself from a possible recession in Europe, and a patchy U.S. economic recovery, analysts believe China needs to further relax monetary policy as early as this month.

Beijing could lower the reserve requirement ratio (RRR), or the level of cash commercial banks must hold as reserves, by another 100 basis points from a lofty 20 percent, analysts say.

The central bank has already cut the ratio three times since November, and surprised financial markets in June by cutting interest rates for the first time since the global financial crisis.

"The further decline in the output, new orders, new export orders components suggests that the China economy still faces downside risks in the near term," said Haibin Zhu, a JPMorgan economist in Hong Kong.

"We expect one more interest rate cut and two more RRR cuts in the third quarter. The next policy move is likely a 50-basis-point RRR cut in July."

The contraction in Japan's factory sector was the first in seven months as a rebuilding boom after the 2011 earthquake and tsunami lost steam.

"This bodes ill for growth heading into the second-half of the year, especially given the fragility of demand in external markets," said Alex Hamilton, an economist at Markit, which gathers the data.

The Bank of Japan has loosened monetary policy this year and the central bank has repeatedly said it is willing to do so again if needed.

The BOJ's tankan survey released on Monday showed big manufacturers were less pessimistic about business conditions in the three months to June compared with the previous quarter.

Many central banks in Asia, and elsewhere, have loosened policy this year as Europe's debt crisis weighed on the global economy.

Most economists polled by Reuters expect the European Central Bank to cut borrowing costs on Thursday in the latest bid to revive the regional economy. But internal resistance to the central bank re-starting its bond-buying program is high.

India's PMI has remained above the 50 level for more than three years, although the country reported its weakest economic growth in nine years in the March quarter at 5.3 percent.

Choctaw grad to coach softball at Union College

Former Choctawhatchee standout Ashton Strode has taken her college softball coaching career to the next level, taking a job to become head coach at Union College in Barbourville, Kent.

Union College Interim Director of Athletics Tim Curry announced that Strode has been tabbed to take over the Lady Bulldog softball program. Strode is the ninth coach in the history of the UC program.

"We are very excited to have Ashton join our staff at Union College," said Curry in a press release. "Although she is a young coach, her extensive background in the game has prepared her well to lead our program into the future."

Strode comes to Barbourville off a two-season stint as an assistant coach at Union University in Jackson, Tenn.

This past season, Union went 46-12 overall, and captured the 2012 TranSouth Conference Championship, the program's first since 2004. The season culminated with a birth in the 2012 NAIA National Tournament, marking the program's first trip since 2005, as they finished 16th in the country in the final NAIA Coaches Poll of the season.

Strode, originally a native of Baker, starred as a pitcher at Choctaw in the mid-2000?s, earning Daily News Player of the Year honors in 2006.

"I'm very excited to be taking the position here at Union College," said Strode. "I'm ready to get going, and start working with the student-athletes we have here. My main goal is to build off of what has been done the past few years, and try to duplicate some of the success we had at Union University right here in Barbourville."

After graduating from Choctaw, Strode played collegiately at Tennessee-Martin, where she tossed the school?s first perfect game and tied the school?s single-game strikeout record. She also earned All-America honors from the National Fastpitch Coaches Association in 2008.

Off the field, Strode has served as a Tournament Director for the United States Fastpitch Association since 2009, planning and supervising youth tournaments throughout the Southeastern U.S. She's also served as a one-on-one pitching and batting instructor.

Strode earned her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Education and Behavioral Sciences from UT-Martin in 2009. She is also finishing up her Master of Arts in Sports Administration from Union University, and plans to earn the degree later this year.
