Rugby: Blues out to beat the odds in South Africa

It seems incredible a team with four straight defeats and a losing record could still sneak into the playoffs, but the Blues are hoping to beat the odds.

A season which initially offered so much, before derailing leading into the international break, now rests on tomorrow morning's (NZT) match with the Cheetahs.

Win in the Republic, and the Blues' slim hopes survive another week. Lose, and it's time to plan for next season.

Being in contention on the eve of their penultimate game is an impressive feat after last year's dysfunctional campaign, and one the team owe entirely to their penchant for picking up bonus points.

Since Super Rugby began offering six playoff places two seasons ago, no side with fewer than 10 wins have had a sniff of the finals. If the Blues beat the Cheetahs and follow it next week with an unlikely victory over the Chiefs, they could squeeze in with eight wins and eight losses.

The difference in that scenario would be the Blues' competition-leading 12 bonus points. Worth three wins, those extra points kept the Blues' season alive when last week's last-minute loss to the Sharks seemed to extinguish their hopes.

And the unlikely reprieve has understandably lifted the spirits of Sir John Kirwan's side, with the coach confirming the frenetic finale has proven to be a positive.

"Everyone's excited about it, we realise how big a game it is," Kirwan said. "It's come down to a couple of games, which is sort of exciting guys rather than them worrying about it.

"It's really positive from a team spirit point of view but we've just got to try to put together an 80-minute performance. I think it's fair to say, if you look at our last few games, we've been playing well in patches rather than over the 80 minutes."

It's also fair to say those patches didn't come at the conclusion of last week's game. The Sharks crossed for the match-winner with 20 seconds on the clock, a defeat Kirwan called devastating, but one that, perhaps surprisingly, wasn't entirely toxic.

"The boys were incredibly proud of the way they kept hanging in [last week]. The scrum got bent but the guys in the front row were still running around the corner and making their tackles. To get another life like this is really down to us scoring all those bonus points."

And, with all those bonus points proving so profitable, the Blues aren't about to change their approach to match the high stakes.

"Our lineout was fine last week but it was the scrum that we got six penalties off. In Africa, if you give away that many penalties, they'll kick you into the corner, and they're big men so they'll drive you.

"If we can clean that up, continue to play our style, the boys know that if we can hang on to the ball we're pretty dangerous."

College Laptop

Hello, I'm a new forum member hoping to find insight on buying my first laptop as I go off to school away from home. I welcome any advice as I have only recently figured out the recent parts out for laptops with the 4th gen i7s and Gt7xxm series.

Few questions before the FORM is
- Is a small SSD on the side worth the extra cost at my budget?
- Is 1920x1080 not worth it at my budget?
- Will I have to extend my budget for my needs?

1) What is your budget?
$1000 is around what I want to spend. Cheaper options are welcome and spending a bit more for a much better option is as well.

2) What size notebook would you prefer?
c. Thin and Light; 13" - 14" screen
d. Mainstream; 15" - 16" screen

3) Where will you buying this notebook? You can select the flag of your country as an indicator.
USA

4) Are there any brands that you prefer or any you really don't like?
Will listen to all options

5) Would you consider laptops that are refurbished/redistributed?
Most likely not

6) What are the primary tasks will you be performing with this notebook?
Other than taking it around to my classes (battery life probably important for this reason), I am an avid gamer.

7) Will you be taking the notebook with you to different places, leaving it on your desk or both?
Both

8) Will you be playing games on your notebook? If so, please state which games or types of games?
League Of Legends (Prefer higher settings)
Team Fortress 2 (Prefer higher settings)
Guild Wars 2 (Settings not too important as long as its not the lowest ones)
Wouldn't mind running games that require more power like skyrim at mediumish settings (If not, I can live)

9) How many hours of battery life do you need?
4-5? Wouldn't mind advice from other college students

10) Would you prefer to see the notebooks you're considering before purchasing it or buying a notebook on-line without seeing it is OK?
Online is fine

11) What OS do you prefer? Windows (Windows 7 / 8), Mac OS, Linux, etc.
Windows 8 preferred, if not, I'm flexible.

Screen Specifics

12) From the choices below, what screen resolution(s) would you prefer? Keep in mind screen size in conjunction with resolution will play a large role in overall viewing comfort level. Everyone is different. Some like really small text, while others like their text big and easy to read.

I am leaning towards at least HD+ and 1920x1080 would be nice

13) Do you want a Glossy/reflective screen or a Matte/non-glossy screen?
Leaning towards with Matte but this doesn't really concern me.

Build Quality and Design

14) Are the notebook's looks and stylishness important to you?
No, I actually prefer dull, professional looks.

15) When are you buying this laptop?
Now - Late July/Early August

16) How long do you want this laptop to last?
4 years if possible but if not, at least 2-3 years.

Notebook Components

17) How much hard drive space do you need? Do you want a SSD drive?
Anything over 500GB is fine and SSD is not important (If the laptop has one I'll take a look)

18) Do you need an optical drive? If yes, a DVD Burner, Blu-ray Reader or Blu-Ray Burner?
Probably not? Would a college student need an optical drive? This I'm not too sure.

The Science Behind the Perfect Apple Pie

The Science Behind the Perfect Apple Pie

The New York Times has finally called in the experts to explain why so many apple pies turn out so badly. This great visualization is based on comments from Amy Rowat, a biophysicist at UCLA who teaches a class that covers the delicate science of apple pies.

That might sound ludicrous to some, but it turns out that there's plenty to know, starting with the Maillard reaction, the chemical reaction between amino acid and a reducing sugar that gives the crust that perfect glow (make sure you bake over 375 degrees and brush with egg whites). Some other fascinating info nuggets include: Replacing some of the water with Rum or another alcohol will impede the formation of gluten (which toughens the crust); the tiny droplets of water that make up butter are what create air pockets in the crust; and a bit of flour will fend off runny filling, because its molecules are bigger and slower than water molecules.

But maybe the biggest take-away is that even the tiniest aesthetic detail can affect the taste of your pie, from the shape of your apple slices, the size of your butter chunks, the surface-area-to-volume ratio of the crust. It's a fascinating graphic?my only complaint would be that they should do this for a food made more than a few times a year. The science of tacos? [New York Times]

British police open new probe into Madeleine McCann disappearance

Teri Blythe / Metropolitan Police via AP

Composite photos showing three-year-old Madeleine McCann, left, with a computer generated age progression image of the missing child as she might look now, right, issued Thursday July 4, 2013. British police say Thursday July 4, 2013 they have launched a full investigation into the disappearance of Madeleine McCann, and want to trace 38 "persons of interest" in the case. Detectives say it's possible that Madeleine, who vanished from a Portuguese holiday resort six years ago, is still alive.

By Tracy Jarrett, Staff Writer, NBC News

British police said Thursday that they are launching a new investigation into the disappearance of Madeleine McCann, who vanished as a toddler six years ago in Portugal ? and they believe she may still be alive.

After reviewing their own files and material gathered by Portuguese police and private investigators, British police said they had identified 38 persons of interest, including 12 British nationals believed to be living in Portugal.

Investigators say they have genuine leads into the disappearance of Madeleine McCann, who vanished on a family vacation in Portugal in 2007.

?The review has told me is that there is no clear, definitive proof that Madeleine McCann is dead,?? Andy Redwood, detective chief inspector for Scotland Yard, said Thursday. ?I still genuinely believe that there is a possibility that she is alive.?

Madeleine was 3 years old when she disappeared from her family?s vacation apartment in Praia da Luz in 2007 while her parents were eating dinner at a nearby restaurant. Her case attracted international attention.

Redwood was careful not to call the 38 people suspects. He said British police want to know what role, if any, they played in the disappearance.

He said that the next step will be to ask Portuguese authorities to gather more evidence.

?We, in consultation with our Portuguese colleagues, are absolutely committed to finding out what happened to Madeleine McCann,? he said.

Madeleine?s parents, Kate and Gerry McCann, are working with police as they investigate.

MMA Marketplace: UFC 162 walkout shirt battle

Let's break down the UFC 162 main event in the most important way possible -- the walkout shirts. Anderson Silva will put his belt on the line against Chris Weidman. Who has the better shirt?

Silva's shirt by Nike took as little imagination as possible. Weidman's Bad Boy shirt makes me think somebody's watching me. The price is only a $5 difference between the two. The result? A draw. Neither shirt jumps out as the clear-cut winner.
