Stern sidekick Robin Quivers has surgery

By Courtney Garcia, msnbc.com contributor

Robin Quivers, Howard Stern?s longtime radio wing-woman, announced last week that she would be undergoing "a procedure" to remove a newly discovered tumor on her bladder, a procedure that reportedly was performed on Wednesday, May 23.

Quivers was noticeably vague with her initial statements on the issue, stating on-air on ?The Howard Stern Show? on Monday, May 14 only that she would undergo "a procedure" to remove a grapefruit-sized growth on her bladder, which had awakened her the previous weekend, preventing her from urinating. Reports Examiner.com, following the emergency, Stern?s co-host of?more than?30 years had a CAT scan, which revealed the tumor, and came to work the following Monday attached to a catheter.

Robin Quivers announces she is in the midst of a medical scare that currently requires her to wear a catheter.

?When you see me, I?m peeing,? Quivers joked. ?It could be something not so bad. It could be really bad ... Hopefully it's something that can just be cut out.?

In response, Stern replied sarcastically, ?Think of me for once. You'll be dead and I'll still have to do the show."

It was also Stern who suggested Quivers? surgery took place on Wednesday, offering an emotional tribute to his cohort during his broadcast that day, and commenting on her absence, "Doing a show without Robin is like cutting off my left arm. Or my right arm. Or maybe both.

"She was my backbone, you understand," Stern said. "Where I would lose courage, Robin always had the courage. She always is the brave one. Always the brave one with me. I could go to her, and I could always rely on her.?

While the results of the operation are unknown, the 59-year-old Quivers mentioned she?s had non-cancerous fibroid tumors in the past, and is hoping the current condition is similar. Also reported by Examiner.com, ?The Howard Stern Show? producer JD Harmeyer is equally out of the loop on Quivers? condition, remarking, ?I know as much as the audience does. Clearly she doesn?t want the full details of what?s she?s going through out on the air, because she hasn?t given the full details and I think the less people here who know the full details, the better chance she will have of them not spilling out.?

Stern has said a few times now he would not continue the program without Quivers,?which may not be a far stretch considering his current position as co-host of ?America?s Got Talent,? and ongoing contract dispute with SiriusXM radio, which broadcasts his show. Reports USA Today, after signing a five-year contract with the network in 2010, the self-proclaimed King of All Media sued the company for $300 million in March 2011 over a bonus dispute. The suit was dismissed by a judge in April, citing the?ambiguous language of his contract, but Stern said he will appeal.

Whether or not Quivers? potential exit would be reason enough for Stern to cut ties with the satellite radio company is speculation, but the host appeared disheartened by his colleague?s struggle.
?
"I'll f***ing kill you if you have cancer," said Stern when he heard the news. "I'm not doing the show without you? I'm quitting if you're not doing the show."

"Oh, don't make me cry," she replied.

Americans find doing their own taxes simpler than improving diet and health

ScienceDaily (May 23, 2012) ? Most Americans (52 percent) have concluded that figuring out their income taxes is easier than knowing what they should and shouldn't eat to be healthier, according to the International Food Information Council (IFIC) Foundation's 2012 Food & Health Survey.

The Survey found that people think a great deal about the healthfulness of their diets and want to make improvements. Yet, 76 percent agree that ever-changing nutritional guidance makes it hard to know what to believe. And when it comes to making decisions about food, consumers today rely most often on their own research rather than third-party experts. Six out of 10 Americans have given a lot of thought to the foods and beverages they consume (58 percent) and the amount of physical activity they get (61 percent). Yet, only 20 percent say their diet is very healthful and 23 percent describe their diet as extremely or very unhealthful; less than 20 percent meet the national Physical Activity Guidelines.

"This year's Survey was designed to reveal consumer behavior, not just thoughts and desires. Clearly, there is a disconnect for many Americans," said Marianne Smith Edge, MS, RD, LD, FADA, Senior Vice President, Nutrition and Food Safety, IFIC Foundation. "Some questions also reveal clear differences based on gender and age. For example, men feel it is harder to eat a healthful diet than to find time to exercise, while women feel just the opposite. The percentage of older respondents who say their diet is very or extremely healthful is about twice the rate of younger people. These are important distinctions for health professionals and others who are trying to help individuals and families improve their diet and health."

The IFIC Foundation's 2012 Food & Health Survey found that 90 percent of Americans have given at least a little thought to the ingredients in their food and beverages. Consumers say they are trying to eat more whole grains, fiber and protein, while cutting calories, sugar, solid fats and salt. However, taste (87 percent) remains the most significant determinant of food and beverage choices, followed by price, which dropped significantly as a factor compared to 2011, and healthfulness. In terms of trying to lead healthier lives, nearly 60 percent of Americans believe that online and mobile tools are helpful.

The Survey was fielded by Mathew Greenwald & Associates of Washington, D.C. between April 3 and 13, 2012 and involved 1,057 Americans ages 18 to 80. Results were weighted to match the U.S. Census based on age, education, gender, race/ethnicity, and region to be nationally representative.

Additional Findings from the IFIC Foundation's 2012 Food & Health Survey

? Overall, 55 percent of Americans are trying to lose weight. However, 23 percent of obese consumers and 44 percent of overweight consumers say they are not trying to lose weight.

? Fewer than one in 10 Americans correctly estimate the number of calories they need to maintain their weight and only three in 10 believe that all sources of calories play an equal role in weight gain. Calories from sugar, carbohydrates and fats are believed more likely to cause weight gain.

? During the past year, 66 percent of Americans have given some thought to the sustainability of their foods and beverages, with about 40 percent regularly purchasing locally sourced or recyclable food and beverage products.

? Only 17 percent of Americans say they have stopped buying a specific brand or type of food due to safety concerns and more than half of all consumers (57 percent) believe that the chances are extremely low that they will contract a serious foodborne illness. About half (48 percent) believe foods produced in foreign countries are less safe than foods grown in the U.S.

? The expiration date surpassed the food package Nutrition Facts panel in terms of the information consumers looked for in making food or beverage purchases, although the importance of statements about nutrition and health benefits both rose significantly.

? Six in 10 Americans believe the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulates how food additives may be used but only 36 percent realized the FDA approves or sets daily intake limits for food additives. About half (46 percent) of Americans believe that food colors must be reviewed and approved by the U.S. government before being added to foods.

? Eighty-seven percent of parents believe that it is good for their health to sit down and eat meals with their family and 69 percent of parents worry about the healthfulness of their children's diets more than their own.

? The United States Department of Agriculture's MyPlate graphic was readily recognized by consumers and received high marks for communicating about healthful eating.

Charlize Theron: 'I had no teeth until I was 11'

Stuart Wilson / Getty Images

Charlize Theron shows off her pearly whites May 14 at the London premiere of "Snow White and The Huntsman."

By Us Weekly

New mom Charlize Theron didn't always have a reason to smile.

The Oscar winner, 36, tells British paper The Sun her "early childhood was quite devastating" because she "had no teeth until I was 11."

Because she "had jaundice as a kid," the "Snow White and the Huntsman" actress "was put on so many antibiotics that my teeth rotted. They had to cut them out."

PHOTOS: Stars' most embarrassing yearbook pics

"So I never had milk teeth. That was tough, you know, being in school having photos taken while I was pretending I had teeth," Theron recalls. "It was hideous."

Years later, when she was 16, Theron -- bearing a dazzling smile at last -- was discovered by a modeling scout. "It was totally by mistake. My mother thought it would be a funny joke. Modeling was never a passion of mine, but it was this incredible opportunity."

PHOTOS: Charlize Theron's hottest looks ever

"I grew up in South Africa and I would look at maps and we were at the bottom of the world. There was this whole thing up there. I was always reading encyclopedias about the world. So travel was something I was always attracted to. So when the scout said, 'You can go to Milan!' I was like, 'Ah, hi!' . . . I hadn't even been on a plane prior to that."

In her interview with The Sun, Theron also opens up about her son Jackson, who she adopted in mid-March. "I've never felt more creative and with more energy but on the tiniest amount of sleep. I never knew I needed that little sleep. I always had eight hours and now it's, 'Wow, OK, you can function on just four.' But Jackson is great. I've always been very aware of balance and, even before I had a child, my life always takes priority to my work."

PHOTOS: More stars who have adopted

The "Prometheus" actress added: "I feel very blessed that I have this job but my job is not my life. I'm really lucky that I get to go and do this, but my life is pretty kick-ass, and I take real priority in that."

Charlize Theron attends the "Snow White and the Huntsman" premiere in London and talks about her adopted baby, Jackson.

Comcast rethinks bandwidth caps, trials two new policies that involve higher 300GB monthly limits

Comcast's bandwidth policy has come under fire from several directions lately, and today it's announced plans to test two new systems for managing capacity. In a company blog post, VP Cathy Avgiris describes the new "flexible" approaches it will be testing out in certain markets that start off by raising the limit to 300GB (from 250GB where it's been since 2008) per month. One of the plans involves offering 300GB as a base on its Essentials, Economy, and Performance internet packages, and higher limits on its Blast and Extreme tiers, with extra data available as an add-on, possibly $10 for 50GB or so. The other plan simply bumps all tiers to 300GB per month and offers the additional blocks of data as needed. For markets where it's not testing the new plans, it's suspending enforcement of the 250GB cap entirely for now, although it says it will still contact "excessive" users about their usage.

We're currently on a conference call concerning the changes and Comcast is reaffirming its belief that the FCC has decided it can "manage" data usage on its network, and that it will continue to do so in a "non-discriminatory" way. Particularly since the launch of its Xfinity TV Xbox 360 app others like Netflix and some consumer and networking watchdogs would beg to differ, it will be interesting to see if these approaches change anything. Executives on the call noted "noise" around the Xbox 360 app in making the change, but also pointed to an "ongoing internal discussion" and simply that times have changed from four years ago. The words that keep coming up so far are choice and flexibility, as well as mentioning that even today, very few customers approach the previous 250GB limit. In response to a question, Avgiris indicated the median usage for customers is still around 8-10GB per month. We'll find out more like where the test markets are later, for now hit the source link for all the information currently available.

Students in tornado-hit Ind. town await 'Lady A'

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) ? Tornadoes battered their school and homes, and spring break was spent cleaning up. Henryville has only begun to rebuild, but for one night, its high school students will get to put aside their worries for a private show by one of country music's biggest acts.

The southern Indiana community will share the spotlight with Grammy-winning Lady Antebellum on Wednesday night at the KFC Yum Center in nearby Louisville, Ky., where the trio will stage a "mini-prom" bash for students at Henryville Junior-Senior High School, followed by a benefit for the devastated community.

"With everything's that's happened ? the tornado and the destruction ? now we'll have something else to remember for the rest of our lives," said Henryville junior class vice president Kaitlyn Maloney, 17, who rode out the March 2 storm with her parents in the basement of their Henryville home. "This will give us something to remember that's happy."

The battered high school landed both events in late March by winning Lady Antebellum's online "Own the Night" contest offering one school a concert at its prom. Schools as far away as northern Wisconsin submitted YouTube videos on behalf of Henryville, an unincorporated town hit by two tornadoes ? one packing 175 mph winds ? on a day when storms killed 13 people in Indiana and 24 in Kentucky.

Singer Hillary Scott said the band was moved by what she called the "selfless" entries from other schools, including rival Silver Creek High School in nearby Sellersburg, Ind.

"That was just such, honestly, an encouraging thing to think that those high schoolers, that generation, they're that helpless, they want to help each other that much," she said. "It was definitely an easy decision."

Scott, who visited Henryville's storm-damaged high school Wednesday in advance of the concert, tweeted afterward, "Seeing the destruction in person was TOUGH. Even more excited to hit the stage tonight!"

Lady Antebellum wasn't able to perform at Henryville's prom in late April due to a conflict with the band's schedule. Instead, it opted for the mini-prom open to the 188 junior and seniors and their dates who attended the school's formal prom, followed by a concert to benefit the town.

Each of Henryville's juniors and seniors received five tickets for floor seating at the show. The juniors and seniors at Silver Creek, the rival Clark County school that nominated Henryville, each received one ticket, said Tahnee Brown of concert promoter National Shows 2.

Lady A's Charles Kelley said the band hopes to lift the Henryville community's spirits by putting on a special show.

"We want to just go there and hopefully bring a little joy, meet them, shake their hands, encourage them to try to get through it as best as they can," the singer said.

The sold-out benefit is accompanied by an online drive that's one of several disaster relief efforts for Henryville. That online drive had generated more than $119,000 by Wednesday morning, but concert organizers say that reflects only a portion of the money that's been collected.

Henryville senior Austin Albert, whose father, Troy Albert, is the high school's principal, said the show will be a huge boost to the hard-hit community.

"It's given us something to look forward to ? something big for a small-town like we're in, that's pretty cool," he said.

The show also could be a sort of homecoming for many town residents, said Monroe Township Trustee Allen Bottorff, a lifelong Henryville resident whose home was damaged in the storms and lost a second one he and his wife were remodeling. He planned to attend the show with his family, including his 18-year-old twins, son Tanner and daughter Drew.

"It's going to be quite a bit of a reunion for a lot of people who have been scattered about," Bottorff said.

Google patent application could mean melody-matching for YouTube

Image

YouTube has become a treasure trove for rare live editions, outtakes and covers of popular songs -- the latter making stars out of acts like Pomplamoose. However, Google and the recording industry don't feel the same way, but the site's famous content filtering system can only handle exact matches of recorded songs -- so that 14-year-old moppet's cover version of Born this Way remains unfiltered. That could change should a patent application made available today result in a workable product. It describes a Melody Identification system that'll pluck out a "melody fingerprint" from any uploaded file and then determine the appropriate "rights management" to apply -- which sounds ominous. The patents haven't been granted and nowhere in the text of either document does it reveal how the company plans to deal with songs that sound very, very similar, but we can't imagine what'll be left if the worst comes to pass: lots of mute cat videos, probably.

Update: Josh Rice in comments pointed out that Pomplamoose actually buys the rights to its covers. That's the nicest form of prior art there is.

No More Beating Around The Bush At Yahoo: Thompson Is Out, Levinsohn In As CEO, Effective Immediately

Yahoo has now officially confirmed the news we reported earlier: Ross Levinsohn is now interim Chief Executive Officer, replacing Scott Thompson, and Fred Amoroso is chairman of the board. Scott Thompson's departure and the reasons for it are not mentioned at all in the statement, which simply says he has left the company. (Earlier a report in AllThingsD had said he would resign for personal reasons, although at least in this statement nothing at all is mentioned for why he has left.) The announcement from Yahoo also underscores how activist shareholder Third Point is very much the key player in all of this.

Dish Network Remote Access iPad app upgrade brings a new UI, more speed

Dish Network Remote Access iPad app upgrade brings a new UI, more speed

Sure, it's not as revolutionary as the new automated ad skipping built into its DVRs, but Dish Network has also just revamped its Remote Access iPad app. While other pay-TV providers are proud about streaming channels to mobile devices only within the home or shifting a few recordings, Dish's tight Sling integration still provides the most video wherever the user might be, as well as DVR management, a full guide and remote control. The 3.0.3 upgrade brings an entirely new user interface that's optimized for the retina display, guide data without interrupting the video, favorite channels list, and claims to speed up the process of both loading various screens and connecting to stream live TV. Hit iTunes for the updated app and let us know how it's working for you.

AWOLNATION Still The 'Underdog' On Next Album

'There's a little chip on my shoulder,' frontman Aaron Bruno tells MTV News of writing the follow-up to the band's Megalithic Symphony.
By James Montgomery

AWOLNATION's Aaron Bruno
Photo: MTV News

AWOLNATION's Aaron Bruno already knows how he wants the follow-up to his band's breakout (and epically titled) Megalithic Symphony album to sound. The key now is finding the time to actually write it.

"I think the next record will be a little more raw, and a little more aggro, and a little stranger, but still have the nursery-rhyme feel of melody, because that's the only way I know how to write," he told MTV News. "I'm working on it now [while the band is on tour] and, really, it's the only thing keeping me sane. Every day I wake up, and I'm so excited to first of all find a shower, and then have a coffee, and then do a couple of other things that I probably can't mention, and then open up the computer and just see what happens. ... It's a nice break from the routine [of] playing the same old songs, meeting the same people, waking up at the same venues, same parking lots across the country."

Yes, such is life for AWOLNATION, who went from relative unknowns to rock-radio monsters based on a relentless tour schedule and the strength of hit singles "Sail" and "Not Your Fault." Since bursting onto the radar, Bruno has seemingly spent every waking minute on the road, and it doesn't look like that will change much anytime soon (AWOL are currently touring until the end of July). So needless to say, he's itching to break the cycle and get into the studio to begin work on the new album. And no, he's not about to shy away from the expectations that come with following a hit album.

"I got a little chip on my shoulder with the songwriting and I've got a lot to say about the world, so there's a little bit of a fist on this new record that I'm excited about," he said. "I've always been the underdog my whole life, and the guys in my band, we all came up in the same situation, so this success is totally new and foreign for us, so I want to maintain the hunger of being the underdog and never feel complacent with the success and always want to reach more ears. Not necessarily to make money, but because I feel the music's important."

And while Bruno's relishing the opportunity to prove the naysayers wrong, he's also trying to stop and appreciate just how far his band has come. Of course, given his nature, that's proving to be easier said than done.

"All of this seems like a joke to me. It doesn't seem real. I wake up every day and I have to remind myself ... this is really happening, it's OK to enjoy it," he laughed. "But I've had a hard time doing that because I'm constantly focused on the next thing."

Are you looking forward to new music from AWOLNation? Let us know in the comments!

Nielsen: Over 50 percent of US mobile users own smartphones, Android and iPhone sitting pretty

iPhone, Galaxy Nexus, Titan

Smartphones crossed an important milestone in March, based on Nielsen's estimates. Just over half of cellphone owners in the US -- 50.4 percent, to be exact -- had a smartphone of some kind, making dumbphones the minority for the first time. The smartphone tale of the tape shows that the OS split has largely tapered off since February. Android has only moved slightly and still sits atop the heap, claiming 48.5 percent of users, but Apple hasn't had to worry given that 32 percent of smartphone owners use an iPhone. As is increasingly becoming the familiar story, other platforms trailed well behind: RIM's BlackBerry sat at 11.6 percent, while Windows Mobile, at 4.1 percent, was more popular than its Windows Phone successor's 1.7 percent. Apple can still claim to be the top-selling individual smartphone maker in the country, suggesting Samsung hasn't translated its worldwide lead to the US just yet.
